This sport was first devised in 1875 in Ooty (Tamil Nadu) by Neville Chamberlain, a British army officer. Its name was actually a derogatory term referring to anyone playing the sport poorly, especially a junior officer! An interesting fact is that in 1969, the BBC introduced a TV series “Pot Black” in order to not only popularise this sport but also to showcase the then new medium of colour television as this sport with its colourful equipment was perfect for that! What sport are we referring to here?
